There's often a backstory to the news on the internetsportsplus ph, in the paper or on the radio.
It might the reason a news organization decided to cover a specific event, issue or phenomenon. Or it might be what happened when a journalist started asking questions or set out to visually capture a situation.
The Detroit Free Press and several other news organizations will offer a glimpse backstage of local journalism at the Detroit Film Theatre on Oct. 11 during Detroit StoryFest.
The Free Press, Michigan Public, BridgeDetroit, WDET, Chalkbeat Detroit, Metro Times, Planet Detroit and Model D will reimagine their reporting live on stage, along with performances by local artists and musicians.
The Free Press' Georgea Kovanis will take readers behind of reporting the life of Amanda, a metro Detroiter who is addicted to drugs and at the same time distributes clean needles and life-saving Narcan to other drug users − a part of harm reduction meant to stem the spread of disease and keep drug users alive. Kovanis and Free Press photographer Mandi Wright spent more than a year with Amanda to show readers the challenges of addiction and what harm reduction looks like in real life.
